Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, has expressed grief over the death of his former Chief Press Secretary, Chief Duro Onabule.

This is stated in a message of condolence signed by Babangida and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Minna, the capital of the state of Niger.

He said: “It was with deep sadness that I received the news of the passing of my dear friend, advisor and older brother, Chief Duro Onabule, who passed away yesterday at the age of 83.

“It is a sad irony that Chief Onabule, who was usually one of the first to celebrate my birthday, died on the eve of my birthday and his passing will no doubt cast a long shadow over the festivities.

” For eight years this very talented journalist and literator stood by me as we tried to redesign this country.

“His intelligence, patriotism and absolute loyalty to the unity of this nation shone through and became a large part of the successes we achieved at the time.”

The former president described the deceased as a man of great historical awareness who understood what needed to be done to properly situate Nigeria’s administrative efforts.

“Especially in light of the special circumstances we found ourselves in, we used his formidable journalistic skills to get the buy-in from fellow Nigerians.

“Chief Onabule was a man of excellent character and I started calling him ‘double chief’ when his people from Ijebu Ode rightly made him a high chief.

“He brought his customary dignity to the position, as he had in every job that ever came his way. I will always remember his loyalty and support, even long after we left office.

“I was pleased to see that after more than 50 years of journalism, he still shines as a public analyst, columnist and chairman of the board of directors of the National Television Authority,” Babangida said.

He added that Onabule was a man who understood that nations must adapt to grow and that any sacrifice made in the interest of one’s own country is worth it.

“May Almighty God receive his soul with grace and give his family and friends the courage to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
