How to Use a Custom Image as a Gmail Background

If none of the preset themes appeal to you, you may make your own by utilizing a custom image as the backdrop. You are free to use any image from your Google Drive.

As a general guideline, we recommend that you adhere to the following picture requirements:

  • The picture must be in JPG or PNG format, and it must be less than 10 MB in size. • The image cannot be animated or translucent.
  • The picture proportions should be appropriate to the size and breadth of your screen (e.g., 1920px by 1200px).

Follow these instructions to set a custom picture as your Gmail background:

  1. Sign in to your Gmail account on your PC, Mac, or Chromebook.

2. In the top-right area, select the gear icon and choose See all settings.

3. At the top, click the Themes tab.

4. After that, click ‘Set theme’.

5. At the bottom of the Themes box, click My Photos.

Select your new background image from Google Drive. If it is missing, first upload it to the Google Drive website.

How to Change the Gmail Background on Android and iPhone

You cannot add a custom theme to the Gmail client on an Android or iPhone device, as you can on a PC or Mac.  You can only select one of three pre-defined color schemes to customize the appearance of your email when using the app.

These themes are Light, Dark, and System Default (which utilizes your device’s color scheme).

To utilize a theme in Gmail on mobile, follow these steps:

  1. On your iPhone or Android device, launch the Gmail app.
  2. In the top-left corner, hit the menu icon (three horizontal lines) and choose Settings.
  3. Select General settings.
  4. Next, click ‘Theme’
  5. Select one of the three available themes to change your theme.

Your Gmail inbox will now have a new backdrop depending on the theme you picked. The theme, however, will only be displayed in the Gmail app.

If you want to change it on your PC or Mac, you’ll need to adjust your theme settings in Gmail using your web browser by following the instructions above.

Want to optimize your inbox even more? Using labels and other inbox types to organize your Gmail inbox is an excellent place to start. You might also consider utilizing numerous Gmail inboxes to control the kind of emails you get to separate email accounts, such as segregating business and personal communications.

You could wish to ungroup Gmail emails, for example, to reduce the number of long email chains you have to sort through.
